Elon Musk Fears He Will Die Before Humans Reach Mars, As Space Innovation Is Very Slow

Image
Hardly anyone can question Elon Musk’s efforts to make human beings a multi-planetary species. The tech billionaire has worked so hard towards the goal that the very objective has, infact, led to the establishment of one of his companies - SpaceX. So it is only natural that Musk would find it troubling if he is not able to achieve this target within his lifetime. With a recent public appearance of his, this now seems highly likely. "If we don't improve our pace of progress, I'm definitely going to be dead before we go to Mars," Musk was quoted as saying on Monday at the Satellite 2020 conference in Washington. "If it's taken us 18 years just to get ready to do the first people to orbit, we've got to improve our rate of innovation or, based on past trends, I am definitely going to be dead before Mars," he added. Known for setting ambitious goals and rapid-fast timelines to achieve them, Musk is understandably upset with the progress that the sp...

Scientists In Israel Are Working On A Coronavirus Vaccine That May Soon Save The World

Image
This is coming from an Israeli publication Ha’aretz which is quoting its medical sources, that have revealed that the scientists have had a major breakthrough in understanding the biological mechanism and qualities of COVID-19, including better diagnostic capability, production of antibodies for those who already have the virus and development of a vaccine. The publication also sheds light on the fact that the vaccine is still far from ready and will have to go through rigorous animal testing before it is cleared to be tested on humans, and this process can take time, months even.  However, when Ha’aertz approached the Israeli Defence Ministry for a statement, they disagreed to confirm this, stating, “There has been no breakthrough in the efforts of the biological institute to find a vaccine for the coronavirus or to develop testing kits. The institute's work is conducted according to an orderly work plan and it will take time. If and when there will be something to r...

7 iPhone Hacks You Actually Haven't Tried Yet

Image
After 12 years of the  iPhone , it's no longer a novelty—and neither are most of the "hacks" that you'll find online. You probably already know that you should close out your background apps for faster performance or that you can put the device into Airplane Mode to charge it up more quickly. Here's something you may not have considered, though: with every operating system update comes new hidden tricks. Last September,  iOS 13 , the latest software, introduced some fancy new features like Dark Mode on all devices, but as with previous software rollouts, there are some covert Easter eggs to discover.

Goodyear's New Tire Concept Can Regenerate Tread on the Go

Image
When all-electric vehicles eventually complete their global takeover, they'll collectively require much less maintenance than their oiled up, transmission-based counterparts. As for the tires? That's a different story. To help drivers avoid the misery of waiting around for a  tire  change, Goodyear has introduced an intriguing  new concept : tires that can regenerate new tread on the spot. Here's how Goodyear says it will work: At the core of the tire is a refillable reservoir that contains a specialized liquid compound. Over time, that liquid is forced from its reservoir and oozes toward the outside of the tire, where capsule-shaped units of tread populate the circumference. Similar to a Push Pop or a tube of lip balm, the liquid compound will slide into the place of the former tread, where it will solidify. The idea is that your tires will never go bald, so unless you have a major puncture wound to deal with, you'll require virtually zero tire replacem...

Coronavirus Nerves: Whoa Horsey!

Image
Someday a future Monty Python comedy troupe will reprise the plague scene from the   Holy Grail   in which a character pushes a cart through a street shouting "Bring out your dead!" only to discover one who isn't dead yet. What will be funny about our era? Perhaps it will have something to do with overreacting to the situation by reordering society, as some have suggested. Those suggestions include, but are not limited to, ending tradeshows, scrapping office cubicles, installing industrial strength HVAC systems to sterilize office air, and imposing untold additional torture on those who still agree to sit in airline seats. I am not so sure. Humans have a habit of straight-line thinking, which is the tendency to think that one thing follows another like a military drill or an assembly line. Nothing could be further from the truth. We project straight-line thinking because when we look back all we see are straight lines. Our parents produced us, their parents pro...

COVID-19 and Computer Security, Part 1: Telecommuting Risks

Image
The United States Office of Personnel Management last week urged agencies to prepare to allow federal employees to telework -- that is, work remotely. This came on the heels of the   Department of Homeland Security   closing its facilities in Washington state, after learning an employee had visited the Life Care facility in the city of Kirkland, which is ground zero for the state's COVID-19 outbreak. Federal employees were told to self-quarantine for two weeks, and the DHS building is being disinfected. It isn't just the federal government that is allowing employees to telework or telecommute. Seattle companies including Amazon, Google, Facebook and others are trying to keep workers safe by letting them do their jobs from home. Coronavirus fears have shut down schools and businesses in the Evergreen State, and public health officials in King County last week recommended allowing employees in the region to stay home. Across the country firms already have started all...

Microsoft Leaves Necurs Botnet in Shambles

Image
Microsoft this week announced the success of its efforts, jointly undertaken with partners across 35 countries, to disrupt the Necurs botnet group blamed for infecting more than 9 million computers globally. There are 11 botnets under the Necurs umbrella, all apparently controlled by a single group, according to Valter Santos, security researcher at  Bitsight , which worked with Microsoft on the takedown. Four of those botnets account for about 95 percent of all infections. "Necurs is the named exploit that is most consistently used," said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the  Enderle Group . The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York last week issued an  order  enabling Microsoft to take control of the U.S.-based infrastructure Necurs uses to distribute malware and infect victim computers. Microsoft figured out the new domains Necurs would generate algorithmically and reported them to respective registries worldwide so they ...

Sonos Is Canning Its Speaker-Killing 'Recycle Mode'

Image
Back in January, high-end speaker manufacturer Sonos announced it would no longer be providing software updates to any hardware that was released prior to 2011, beginning as soon as May. The company told customers that they could trade up for a new device at 30 percent off, but first would have to put the devices into a controversial   "Recycle Mode"   that would effectively brick the speakers. Last week, the company reversed course, quietly removing the wildly unpopular "Recycle Mode" feature from its mobile app. While Sonos is still planning to move forward with the end of software updates for legacy devices, this change means that customers will have a say in what happens to their old speakers—they can keep them, gift them, or take them to their own e-waste recycling facility of choice, or let Sonos handle it. This change-of-heart follows Sonos CEO Patrick Spence's January 23  apology post  to customers. He stated that the company "did not g...

Could TikTok Be Spying on You?

Image
TikTok has your children’s home addresses. FaceApp has your photo and the ability to predict what you’ll look like over the course of your life. Your hotel check-in app shows your travel destinations, room preferences, and upcoming stays. This might not seem like a big deal, but all of this data could be allowing other nations to attack the security of Americans through geotargeting, facial recognition, and pattern projection. A smartphone has the potential to be a more useful weapon than a missile.

How This Robot Taught Itself To Walk In Just A Few Hours

Image
Researchers affiliated with Google Robotics have successfully managed to get a  robot to teach itself  without relying on simulation trials. Using deep  reinforcement learning , a type of machine learning that borrows from concepts used in psychology, the scientists could avoid hard-programming every walking-related command as well as avoid simulation tests. While the field of self-taught robotic locomotion is still nascent, this work provides sufficient evidence that it works. The team's results were  published  to  arXiv.

Amazon Patents a System for Whipping Stuff Into the Air (or Space)

Image
This week the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted a   patent   to Amazon that covers "energy-efficient launch system for aerial vehicles," meaning Amazon could be working on a way to fling your packages into the air—or space. While at first a weird concept, it makes sense in context. This whip-like approach could shoot satellites into space as part of Amazon's  Project Kuiper  low-Earth satellite constellation or Amazon drones that would zoom off to deliver packages. We've reached out to Amazon for comment on the patent and we'll update this story once we get a response.
